There is no better month in the sports I follow than February.
So many thing happen in the shortest month of the year. From auto racing to wrestling, February is jam packed full of great sports events.
First of all there is the biggest even in all of sports: the Super Bowl. This season it resides in Miami and pits two teams who are all offense with just a little defense. Expect a shootout in this one but one mistake by either team will turn this game into a blowout. Peyton Manning makes a key mistake as the Saints go on to win 40-34.
A week after the following that, there is the Super Bowl of NASCAR: The Daytona 500. Forty-three cars in one huge pack. One slip and 20 of the best racers in the world could find themselves watching from pit lane. There is no better way to kick off what is sure to be an exciting NASCAR season than the Daytona 500.
As far as the local beats go, one is ending while another is beginning. The high school wrestling season is hitting its peak this month. The district tournaments are this weekend where the girls state champion could honestly be decided in District 6 at Amarillo High. The next weekend is the Region I Tournament in El Paso. It all comes to a head on the final weekend of February in Austin at the state tournament. Will the Panhandle-area be able to bring home both titles for the third straight year?
And my spring beat gets it going this month as well. The West Texas A&M softball team tries to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Lady Buffs spend a majority of Feb. on the road, but will determine where they stand with a lot of tough opponents.
There is no better month of sports than in February, especially when you throw in the NBA All-Star Game and the first sign of baseball season as pitchers and catchers report. February may be the only month of the year that has a bit of everything sports going on.
