I had the honor of interviewing somebody most of you Cowboys fans have heard from, literally. Brad Sham, play-by-play guy for the Dallas Cowboys made a stop in Amarillo as the key-note speaker at a Boy Scouts of America luncheon today.
Needless to say I was thrilled to meet the guy who has called great comebacks by Roger Staubach, Don Merideth, Troy Aikman, and of course, Tony Romo. He answered a few questions for myself and some other media members. For the rest of the Q&A, read tomorrow's paper or check out amarillo.com Wednesday morning.
What's it like to do a radio broadcast in Cowboys Stadium?
"It's a great building. I made a point of going to the NBA All-Star game as a fan. Bought my ticket and sat in the stands. I sat on the third level and I didn't need "Godzilla-vision" to see the game. But if you were sitting higher up, there is no bad seat. There won't be another stadium like that one for a long time."
What are your thoughts on the labor situation?
"It's of great concern to me personally. There is part of you that wants to say how could they possibly, with all the money at stake, let it get to the point where your not playing professional football. That doesn't make any sense. Having said that, in the 32 years I have been doing this, I have been through two labor stoppages. I've broadcast replacement games in '87 and there was a stretch in '82 where they didn't play for several weeks. It is possible that they could be that stupid. And by they I mean all of them. I've heard enough doom and gloom to believe that it will probably go into March of next year before backs really get put up against walls."
How do you come up with some of those crazy nicknames for the players?
"It's just stupid stuff I make up but the problem is there is a limit to it. The problem is once you've heard it and the highlight is out there, there are only so many times I can say 'Tashard Choice is the people's choice.' You have to move on to something else. I never plan any of that stuff you just have to hope the moment seizes you and you rise to the occasion."
